Vehicle Excise Tax Abatements

If you no longer own a vehicle or have moved out of Massachusetts, you may be entitled to an abatement (an adjustment to the balance due or a refund if the excise had already been paid).

Some examples are (full list is located on the back of the abatement form):

  • Vehicle sold or traded
  • Vehicle stolen or totaled
  • Vehicle repossessed
  • Vehicle junked or totaled
  • Vehicle returned (Lemon Law)
  • You have moved out of Massachusetts

For a vehicle you no longer LEASE, contact your leasing company.

Abatements/Refunds must calculate to a minimum $5.00 to be eligible/qualify.

Abatements/Refunds are calculated to the remaining number of FULL months in that calendar year.  A vehicle sold/traded/junked/etc. in December will not be eligible for an abatement that same year (no more FULL months left in that calendar year)

No excise can be abated to less than $5.00. (The minimum billing is $5.00 in the year the vehicle sold/traded/junked/etc.)

Deadline for abatements (whichever is later):

  • Within 3 years the excise is due
  • One year after the excise has been paid
